Worth knowing
Lepanto S.p.a. - Sedi; cover, cost and conditions
Astilleros Lepanto was a Barcelona yard whose name lives on through the Noray yachts. The most familiar of them, the Noray 38, was drawn by the Spanish designer Javier Visiers, who also designed the larger Noray 43. That boat was launched at the Barcelona boat show and grew out of the offshore prototype Ilusión. Hulls were laid up in glassfibre, and the sailing yachts carry a sloop rig on aluminium spars. The designs are recognisable by classic lines with a racing background, and by the name they all share: noray is the Spanish word for a bollard. The sources do not say how long the yard operated or when it closed.
Our model records hold four designs, two sailing yachts and two motor yachts. The Noray 38 has the longest run, from 1972 to 1984, while the Noray 50, built from 1974 to 1981, is the largest at 15.5 metres. On the power side sit the Noray 30 at 8.9 metres, built from 1974 to 1983, and the Gran Noray at 9 metres, built from 1975 to 1982. None of the four reaches into recent build years, so every Lepanto boat today is more than forty years old. The Noray 43 that Visiers drew for the yard does not appear in our records. The sailing yachts are clearly the larger half of the range.
A Noray today is a classic, and buying one means buying its history. On the sailing yachts, check the chainplates, the keel bolts and the condition of the aluminium mast at the step and the spreaders, since forty years of load leave their mark. Glassfibre hulls of this era are usually thick, but osmosis blisters below the waterline are worth a proper survey. On the Noray 30 and the Gran Noray, the age of the engine and whether it has already been replaced matter more than anything else. Many of these boats have spent their whole lives in the Mediterranean, where the sun is hard on decks and hatches. A full set of papers and a record of refits make a big difference.
