Marina Brodersby sits on the Schlei, the long Baltic inlet between Schleswig and Kappeln in northern Germany. Under the Kiel Classic name it builds motorboats styled after classic tenders. The planing hulls are drawn by Peter Neumann and laminated in glassfibre or, if the owner asks for it, in carbon fibre. On the water they stand out through a sharp, deep V stem, a fixed windscreen and flat lines running out to the stern. The look is restrained, yet the hull underneath is that of a seaworthy day cruiser.
Our model records hold 15 designs, 13 motor yachts and two motorboats. The range opens with the Kiel Classic 22 at 6.13 metres and ends with the Kiel Classic 44m at 13.69 metres. Several sizes come in versions marked m and t, and the 28 and 44 also appear as m+ht. The oldest entries, the Kiel Classic 23 and 27, start in 1997 and run until 2020. The Kiel Classic 41 and the Outrageous at 8.35 metres have ended too, both in 2018. The remaining eleven reach into the most recent build years, including the two motorboats, the 24m and 24t, at just under seven and a half and just under eight metres. Six entries measure more than ten metres.
A Kiel Classic is built for day trips on sheltered Baltic water, where the deep V stem earns its keep in short, steep chop. Carbon hulls are light and stiff but need a surveyor who knows the material, since damage can hide under an intact gelcoat. On any used boat, check the windscreen mounting and its seals, because a fixed screen takes the full force of spray. Varnished or wooden trim is part of the classic look and wants regular attention. Many owners keep their boats on the Schlei and lift them out for winter, so cradle points and the underside of the hull say a lot about how carefully a boat has been handled. The smaller models trail easily to other cruising grounds.
