MAS s.r.l.; cover, cost and conditions
MAS is a yard from Como. Its name recalls the MAS, the fast motor craft of the Italian Navy in the First World War. The yard was set up to build one particular boat, the MAS 28, drawn by the sailing yacht designer Alessandro Vismara. The idea was to bring the light construction of racing sailboats to a motorboat: less material and fewer structural parts, finished with a teak deck and details such as a retractable swim platform. The MAS 42 Sport came later, styled by the Milanese architect Paolo Rossi on a deep-V hull by Fabio Buzzi, with twin Cummins engines and surface-piercing propellers. The boats are recognisable by a sporty line with classic touches.
Our model records list four designs, all classed as motor yachts. Three belong to the MAS 28: the Elegance from 2000 to 2019, the Sport from 2000 to 2007 and the MAS 28 T from 2005 to 2019, all about 8.4 metres long. The MAS 42 Sport appears from 2005 to 2019 and measures 12.64 metres. None of them reaches the most recent build years; the last boats date from 2019 and the oldest from 2000. The family therefore splits in two: a compact sportsboat in three versions and a much larger day cruiser with a cabin and a tender garage. The MAS 28 Sport had the shortest run, ending in our records as early as 2007.
A light, fast boat asks for careful inspection before purchase. The weight-saving build of the MAS 28 makes it worth checking deck and hull for stress cracks around fittings and the engine bed. On the MAS 42 Sport, the twin engines and surface drives need regular service, and their records say a great deal about the life the boat has led. The teak deck, if still original, may need recaulking or replacing after two decades. Retractable parts such as the swim platform should move smoothly and lock firmly. Boats kept on fresh-water lakes are spared salt, but how the engines were laid up over winter matters just as much.
