Molenmaker en Mantel; cover, cost and conditions
Molenmaker en Mantel was a steel boatyard in Sneek, in the Dutch province of Friesland. Willem Molenmaker and Piet Mantel had both worked for the cutter builder Arie van Nugteren in Sneek before they went out on their own in 1960. They started in a farmhouse, moved to the Prinsengracht in Sneek and from 1965 worked from a shed on the IJlsterkade that they had put up themselves. Everything was built in steel, mostly round bilge hulls, to designs by Koopman, Vripack, Colin Archer and De Vries Lentsch as well as their own Molenmaker en Mantel cutters. Motor vlets and motor cruisers came off the slipway too. The partnership between the two founders ended in 2002. A 1977 cruiser described by a Dutch broker has a hard chine steel hull, an aft cabin and both inside and outside steering.
Our model records list two of the yard's designs, both entered as motor yachts. The Molenkruiser at 9.5 metres appears from 1972 to 1978, the Molenkruiser 1200 GSAK at 12 metres from 1976 to 1983. For three years, 1976 to 1978, both lines were built side by side. Neither reaches into recent production, and the youngest build year on record is 1983. The two sizes are 2.5 metres apart, so the larger cruiser offers noticeably more room below. Both lengths are typical for steel cruisers that spend their lives on rivers, canals and inland lakes. The yard's cutters and vlets do not appear in our data; only the two Molenkruiser lines are listed.
Steel is forgiving but never maintenance free. On a cruiser of this age an ultrasonic thickness survey of the plating tells more than any glossy paint, especially at the waterline, under the engine and in the bilge corners where water collects. Anodes should be renewed regularly, and the paint system kept intact. Check the hydraulic steering, the rudder bearings and the condition of the windscreen if it folds down for low bridges. Engine hours, exhaust and cooling deserve attention, as most of these boats have been running for decades. Many owners use them for long summers on the Dutch and German inland waterways, moving slowly from lock to lock and mooring in town harbours.
