Northern Marine builds in Anacortes, Washington, on the waters of Puget Sound. The yard was founded by Richard Bud LeMieux after more than twenty years at Delta Marine in Seattle. Its speciality is the expedition yacht, modelled on the fishing fleets of the North Pacific, which means sturdy vessels for long distances and rough water. Construction is fibreglass, laminated by vacuum infusion. The range spans 57 to 100 feet. In September 2019 the brokerage house Seattle Yachts bought the yard together with its moulds and the rights to the brand.
Our model records hold one design: the Northern Marine 58, a motor yacht of 19.6 metres built from 1994 to 2001. No other lines of the yard appear in our records, although it went on to build larger yachts. That makes the 58 one of the older boats of the brand, and even the youngest examples in our data are now around two decades old. Buying one today means buying a second-hand long-range yacht that has often had several owners and plenty of sea miles.
An older expedition yacht is a systems boat as much as a hull. On a 58 the engine room deserves the longest look: hours on the main engine and generator, the condition of the stabilisers, fuel tanks and filters, and the state of the wiring after years of refits.
