Silverton Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Silverton built motor yachts in New Jersey. The brothers John and Warren Luhrs took over a small builder of Jersey skiffs at Toms River in 1969 and carried it on as Silverton at Millville. The range was cabin boats for coastal water: convertibles with a flybridge, sedan bridges and motor yachts with an aft cabin. You recognise them by the tall boxy superstructure, the large upright side windows and the wide flybridge carried well forward, under which sits a cabin unusually large for the length. Building ended in 2012 and the brand changed hands.

Our model records list 73 Silverton models, 72 of them motor yachts and one a motorboat. Recorded build years start in 1976. Sixty series are recorded: the convertibles from the 29 to the 43, the sedan bridges 38 and 43, the motor yachts 35 and 39, the cruisers 36, 45 and 50 C, the T models 45 and 50 and the Ovation 52 and 55. Lengths run from 9.1 to 16.5 metres, half the models between 10.5 and 12.6 metres. The number gives the approximate length in feet and the letters the layout: C for convertible, SB for sedan bridge, MY for motor yacht.

Most of these boats date from the 1980s and 1990s, which is the useful thing to know about the brand: they are now old enough that condition tells more than the year does. On a boat of that age the engines, the generator, the electronics and any later refit are what separate two otherwise identical hulls, and none of it shows in a length figure.
