Smelne builds steel motor yachts at Drachten in Friesland. The business started in 1968 with rowing boats and small craft; in 1970 production moved to Buitenstvallaat and in 1979 to its present site at De Steven. What it builds are displacement yachts for inland water and sheltered coast, alongside the Vlet, a shallow form modelled on the Dutch working boat and used for day trips and weekends. You recognise the yachts by the curved steel hull with its soft sheer, the heavy rubbing strake and the wheelhouse with its large upright windows.
Our model records list 49 Smelne models, all of them motor yachts. Build years start in 1988 and run into current production. Forty nine series are recorded: the S models 1180, 1280, 1380, 1480 and 1500; the OK models 1250, 1350 and 1450; the 1420 SC; the Vlet models 42 SD, 1050 OK, 1120 AK and OK and 1200 AK; the Slingshot 40 and 46; and the older DL models 1040, 1140 and 1240. Steel is the thing to understand here. It rusts wherever the protection is broken, and by preference where nobody looks: under the sole, behind tanks, around through hull fittings. These boats also live mostly on inland water, where locks, bridges and tight moorings produce a different kind of wear from the open sea.
