Striker Boats N.V.; cover, cost and conditions

Striker means aluminium motor yachts built for offshore sportfishing. The brand goes back to Herbert Phillips, a merchant marine officer who came out of the Second World War convinced that welded metal hulls suited leisure boats, and who turned early to a light aluminium alloy. Building took place in the Netherlands: the first 35 foot Striker was finished in 1959 at what is now the Heesen yard, and Hakvoort also built many of them. Every hull came from Thomas De Groot, a modified V with inner and outer chines and a box keel. The last Striker, a 70 footer, was launched in 1995.

Our model records list 14 Strikers, all classed as motor yachts and built between 1965 and 1980. The Striker 35, 37 SF, 43 and 53 and the Sportsfisherman 44 all start in 1965, while the Striker 38 and 48 are the last to end, in 1980. Four models carry the SF suffix, the 37 SF, 38 SF, 48 SF and 68 SF, and the Super-Sport 38 completes the list. Sizes run from the 10.4 metre Striker 34 to the 20.72 metre Striker 68 SF: six boats sit between 10.4 and 11.6 metres, five between 13.2 and 14.9 metres, and three reach 16 metres or more. The number in the name is close to the length in feet.

Aluminium does not rust like steel, but it reacts badly to contact with other metals. Sacrificial anodes, careful shore power wiring and a regular look at fittings where stainless meets alloy matter more on a Striker than paint. These are berth boats, and after more than four decades few are still in original condition, so a survey of hull welds and engine beds tells more than the build year.
