Suomen Puuvenepiste is a Finnish design office for wooden rowing boats. The designs come from Ruud van Veelen. It is chiefly known for the Savo racing rowing boats with sliding seats, slim hulls for fast rowing on the lakes. The hulls are built from computer-cut kits: planking goes on over a jig with stem forms, followed by frames, bearers for the sliding seat, rub rails, paint and varnish. Building is not limited to Finland; authorised builders abroad produce the boats too, including the Old Wharf Dory Company, which builds the whole range. You recognise one by its pale wooden planking, the varnished interior and the long, narrow hull.

Our model records list six designs. They are entered as other boats, and no lengths are recorded. The oldest is the Churchboat Poseidon 14+1 from build year 2010, a church boat of the kind Finland knows for large rowing crews. The three Savo designs arrived in 2016: the Savo 575 S, the Savo 650 S and the Savo 650 Double. In 2018 came the Suomen Saajuu 470 Skiff and the Suomen Sinne 610 Expedition, a boat whose name already hints at longer trips. All six designs reach into the most recent build years, so the range is still being built. The numbers in the names identify the designs; we hold no length for them.

A wooden rowing boat rewards steady care. Varnish and paint are the skin of the hull: touch up chips before water gets into the wood, and give the brightwork a fresh coat when it turns dull. Store the boat dry and under a roof, upside down on padded supports, and let it breathe rather than wrapping it tight. Sliding seat rails and riggers want a check for loose screws every season. On a used boat, press gently along the planking and around the frames for soft spots, and look at the glue lines of a kit build. Built well and kept well, such boats row for decades.
