Insuring Sur Marine: cover and premium

SUR Marine is an Italian brand founded in 1999 that made its name with tenders for motor and sailing yachts, supplied to several British and French yacht builders for delivery with their boats. It builds in a light double-shell construction, which saves weight, eases the load on the parent yacht's crane and davits and lets the boats run efficiently on modern four-stroke outboards. The range is organised in lines. Easy stands for simple tiller-steered tenders, Classic for side-console models, and Prestige for the better equipped series with removable fuel tanks and a choice of layouts and engines for watersports. The type names give the boats away, combining a prefix, a length figure and the line, as in ST 330 Classic.

Our model records list 22 designs: 17 rigid inflatables and five soft inflatables of the LT range from the LT 190 to the LT 300. Entries start in 2016 with the ST 430 Prestige, most designs are listed from 2017, and 20 of the 22 reach into the most recent build years. Only the ST 430 Prestige and ST 480 Prestige stop earlier, in 2022 and 2021. The ST range has 13 designs: two Rider models, five Classic models from 2.65 to 3.26 metres and six Prestige models from 3.5 to 4.82 metres. The four Easy tenders measure 2.7 to 3.7 metres. The longest boat is the ST 470 Prestige at 4.82 metres. Our list gives no usable length for the LT 190; the rest start with the LT 220 at 2.2 metres. No design reaches five metres.

A tender leads a busy life between davits, bathing platform, anchorage and beach, and a used one shows it. Check the tubes for abrasion where they meet the swim platform or the quay, look at the seams and valves, and leave the boat inflated for a day to see whether it keeps its pressure. On a double-shell hull, inspect the keel and the joint between the shells for cracks after beach landings. Lifting points must be sound if the boat is to hang from a crane or davits. Outboard hours, the fuel tank and the steering on console models deserve a test run, and the boat should still fit the space it was bought for on the parent yacht.
