Ta Shing builds yachts in southern Taiwan, at Tainan. The works began with fishing vessels, later took on sailing yachts for American clients, among them the Mason 43 of 1977, and since 1992 have built the motor yachts of the Nordhavn range: long distance boats with a displacement hull, laid out for ocean passages under their own power. You recognise them by the tall solidly built hull with its pronounced sheer, the wheelhouse with windows all round and a foredeck that looks more like a working ship than a leisure yacht.

Our model records list 50 Ta Shing models: 29 motor yachts, 20 sailing yachts and one motorsailer. Recorded build years start in 1976 and run into current production. Fifty series are recorded: the Nordhavn in 35, 40, 41, 51, 52, 60, 63, 64, 68, 71, 72, 76, 80, 86 and 96, plus the Nordhavn 56 as a motorsailer, the 59 CP and the 75 EYF. From earlier years come the sailing yachts Mason 43, Nautic 40 and Dynasty 72. Lengths run from 9.1 to 45 metres, half the models between 13.4 and 19.8 metres.

A long range motor yacht is a different animal from a fast cruiser of the same length. It carries fuel for thousands of miles rather than for a weekend, which shows in the depth of the hull and in what is packed below the sole: engine, generator, stabilisers, watermaker, tankage. None of that appears in a length figure, and all of it is part of what the boat is.
