Terranauta; cover, cost and conditions
Terra Nauta is a Croatian yard that sits surprisingly far from the sea, in Jastrebarsko near Zagreb. It was founded by the boatbuilder Darko Valentić, who, according to a profile of the yard, still runs it himself. The idea came from a ten metre boat he had bought and wanted to change in countless ways, so he sat down and sketched a better one. Naval architect Srđan Đaković draws the lines in house. The Terra Nauta 40 was presented in 2008, and the smaller Terra Nauta 30 followed ten years later. The yard builds cabin cruisers and outboard boats between roughly nine and thirteen metres, with shapes taken from Croatian boating tradition, and its name comes from a legend told on the island town of Komiža.
Our model records hold one design under Terranauta: the TerraNauta 40, entered as a motor yacht of 12.17 metres with build years from 2009 to 2015. The entry does not reach the most recent build years, and the smaller Terra Nauta 30 is not in our records. The builder's figures describe a glassfibre hull with two cabins and four berths, room for up to twelve people, a draught of 1.03 metres, 1,200 litres of fuel and 300 litres of fresh water. Top speed is given as up to 38 knots. The boat is certified in CE category B, meant for offshore passages in moderate seas rather than ocean crossings.
A fast twelve metre motor yacht from this period asks for attention below the waterline and in the engine room. On a used TerraNauta 40, look at the engine hours and service records, the shaft seals and the condition of the running gear, since high speeds put real load on all of them. Fuel tanks of this size deserve a check for water and sludge. Many of these boats have spent their lives in Croatian marinas, so a survey of the gelcoat for sun damage and of deck fittings for leaks is time well spent. Shallow draught at just over a metre makes quiet anchorages along the Adriatic islands easy to reach.
