Worth knowing
Terranova Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Terranova was founded in 2000 and set out from the start to build explorer-style yachts: semi-displacement hulls in glassfibre with a Mediterranean approach to layout. The first model was the Explorer 85, with exterior lines by Barracuda Yacht Design, and smaller Explorers followed; Studio Spadolini has also designed for the yard. In 2015 the company passed to Massimigliano Zilioli, who had owned boats for more than twenty years. Head office moved to Grone near Bergamo, with the yard in the Navicelli district of Pisa. The look is easy to recognise once seen: a profile reminiscent of a small tug, finished inside as a yacht.
Our model records list three designs, all classed as motor yachts. The Explorer 85 is the largest at 25.9 metres and the longest running, with build years from 2002 to 2015. The Terranova 58 measures 18 metres and the Terranova 68 20 metres; both are entered from 2003 to 2009. None of the three reaches into the most recent build years, the latest entry being 2015. Every yacht in the list is longer than 18 metres, a size at which a professional crew or at least a very experienced skipper is usual. The newer models launched after the 2015 change of ownership are not part of our records.
A yacht of this type is built to travel far at modest speed, so the machinery deserves as much attention as the hull. When buying a used Terranova, ask for the engine hours and service history of the main engines and generators, and look at shaft seals, stabilisers if fitted, and the condition of tanks and fuel lines. A semi-displacement hull of this length carries a lot of weight in fuel, water and equipment, so trim and the state of shafts and propellers say a great deal about past use. Glassfibre superstructures should be checked for cracks around windows and deck fittings. A full survey out of the water, with the engines run under load, is the sensible starting point.
