The Luhrs Marine Group; cover, cost and conditions

Luhrs started in Morgan, New Jersey, where Henry Luhrs opened a repair yard in the 1930s that grew into Henry Luhrs Sea Skiffs. The family sold the business to the Bangor Punta conglomerate in 1965. His sons stayed in boatbuilding: in 1969 they bought Silverton Sea Skiffs in Toms River, and over the next twenty years they assembled the Luhrs Marine Group, which took in Hunter Marine in Alachua, the Mainship trawlers from Millville and, from 1986, fishing boats under the Luhrs name built in St. Augustine, Florida. The group filed for Chapter 11 in April 2012, and the companies were then sold off one by one. A Luhrs is easy to read: a classic American sportfisherman with a big aft cockpit, either as an Open with an open helm or as a Convertible with saloon and flybridge.

Our model records list 22 designs, 21 of them motor yachts and one a motorboat. The oldest are the four Cruisers, the 250, 280, 320 and 360, built from 1971 to 1979; at 7.5 metres the Cruiser 250 is the smallest Luhrs. The three-digit range arrives in the mid nineties with the 290 Open, the 320, 360 and 400 and the 500 in Open and Convertible form, recorded until 2005 or 2006. From 1997 the two-digit models 28, 31, 32, 36, 38 and 41 take over, most of them until 2012, with the Luhrs 28 Open last listed in 2015. Ten designs are Opens and seven are Convertibles. Fifteen measure ten metres or more, and the Luhrs 500 tops the list at 15.5 metres. None of the lines runs into the most recent build years.

Every Luhrs on the market today is second hand, and some come over from the United States. A sportfisherman works hard: long runs offshore, a cockpit full of tackle and bait, salt water everywhere. On a used boat, look at the cockpit sole and the scuppers, the fuel tanks and the shaft logs, and ask for the engine hours and service history of both inboards. Flybridge structures on the Convertibles should be checked for cracks around the ladder and rail mounts. A survey before purchase pays off, especially on boats from the late nineties, which can still be in very good order when they have spent their winters in a shed.
