Tollycraft Corp.; cover, cost and conditions

Tollycraft was an American motor yacht builder from Kelso, Washington. Its founder, Robert Merland Tollefson, known as Tolly, was a carpenter who never trained as a naval architect. In 1946 he bought a mill in Kelso that made doors and windows and began building small plywood runabouts sheathed in fibreglass on the side. After the mill burned in 1952 he launched Tollycraft Yachts with five employees, and in 1959 moved into a larger plant for all fibreglass boats. Owners still gather in Tollycraft clubs. The number in each name is roughly the length in feet, with tags such as Sedan or CMY for cockpit motor yacht.

Our model records list 19 Tollycraft designs, 18 motor yachts and one motorboat, the Tollycraft 24. Recorded build years run from 1970 to 1996. Ten lines run until 1996, among them the 30 SC and 40 SS, both listed from 1970. A late generation arrived in 1988 and 1989: the 34 SS, 39 SY, 40 SDMY, 44 CMY, 53 MY, 57 CMY and 61 MY. Sizes go from the 7.2 metre Tollycraft 24 to the 18.6 metre 61 MY.

Every Tollycraft is now at least thirty years old and many have crossed from the US to Europe. Engines, shafts and the hull matter more than the brochure, and a recent survey is the honest starting point. These are berth boats for coastal cruising and long weekends aboard, and the woodwork inside rewards a dry, ventilated winter.
