Worth knowing
Tomco Marine Groupe Inc.; cover, cost and conditions
American Tug yachts come from Tomco Marine Group in La Conner, Washington, right on the Swinomish Slough. The company was started by Tom Nelson, and the line took shape in talks with Lynn Senour, a naval architect well known on the West Coast. The boats are sturdy semi-displacement trawlers. You recognise them by the tug profile: a tall pilothouse set well forward, a bold bow and a compact superstructure that looks more like a workboat than a sport yacht. Every model carries the American Tug name plus a number roughly matching its length in feet.
Our model records list ten designs, all motor yachts. The American Tug 34 opens in 2004, followed by the 41 in 2005 and the 49 in 2006. Three digit names arrive in 2007 with the 365, 395, 435 and 525, then the 485 in 2011, the Waypoint in 2017 and the 362 in 2018. Five lines run into the latest build years: the 362, 365, 395, 435 and 485. Lengths range from 11.12 metres for the 362 to 16.22 metres for the 525, with four models between 11.1 and 11.8 metres, three between 12.9 and 13.9 metres and three above 15 metres.
These are diesel boats for long distances at modest speed, at home on canals, rivers and the coast with many nights aboard. At eleven to sixteen metres they live in a marina and come out by crane for winter. A big pilothouse with lots of glass means seals and wipers need regular attention, and the diesel and generator should get their service before the long trips rather than after.
