Trans World Yachts is a builder from Taiwan, a country that turned out a great many cruising yachts for the American market from the seventies onwards. The name appears on both sailing and motor yachts, up to the 32.9 metre Trans World 108 that Boat International records as delivered in 2005. The most familiar sailing design is the Transworld 41, a centre cockpit ketch based on a design by the American naval architect William Garden. It belongs to the same family of Taiwanese offshore cruisers as the Formosa 41 and the CT 41, and sales listings describe it as a version of the Formosa. On the power side there is the Del Rey 43, a sundeck trawler with flybridge and two helm stations on a fibreglass hull.
Our model records list two designs, one sailing yacht and one motor yacht. The Transworld 41 measures 13 metres and is shown for build years 1982 to 1988. The Del Rey 43 reaches 13.5 metres and runs from 1990 to 1997. Neither line continues into the recent build years. The two are almost the same length, yet they stand for very different ways of travelling: the ketch for long passages under sail, the trawler for unhurried coastal and canal cruising with plenty of living space.
Boats from Taiwanese yards of this period typically carry a lot of teak, inside and out, and that is where a survey should start. Teak decks laid over plywood can let water into the core, so check for soft spots and leaking fastenings. Wooden spars, if still fitted on the ketch, need close inspection, as do chainplates and the bonding of the bulkheads. Fuel and water tanks of this era were frequently built in steel or black iron and may be nearing the end of their life. On the Del Rey, look at the engines, the flybridge structure and the window seals. Both designs make capable liveaboard boats once these points are sorted.
