True World Marine; cover, cost and conditions

True World Marine grew out of commercial fishing. According to the American fishing press, the company first built 50 to 100 foot commercial fishing boats in Alabama and in 1980 set up Master Marine, a New England offshoot building boats for bluefin tuna. The TE range comes from that work: Henry Masters drew the 28 footers so that a crew of two could handle a big bluefin and still run the boat. They are easy to recognise by their high freeboard, very wide side decks that let you walk round the cabin, a semi enclosed helm under a hardtop and a single diesel instead of outboards. The hull is hand laid solid glassfibre.

Our model records list four True World Marine designs, all classed as motor yachts. Three belong to the TE range: the TWM 288 TE at 8.65 metres, the TWM 2810 TE at 8.75 metres and the TWM 289 TE at 8.96 metres. The fourth is the TWM 34 FT, at 9.86 metres the largest. The 288 TE, the 2810 TE and the 34 FT start with build year 2007, the 289 TE follows from 2013. Two lines, the 2810 TE and the 289 TE, run into the most recent build years, while the other two end in 2017. The whole range sits in a narrow band between 8.7 and 9.9 metres.

These are working boats at heart, and a used one should be judged that way. The single diesel is the heart of the boat, so ask for service records, check the raw water cooling and look at the drive or shaft arrangement, since some models pair the diesel with a sterndrive. Wide side decks and high rails make it safe to move around offshore, but the stainless rails and their bases deserve a check for movement. Fish boxes and the livewell should drain freely. Decks and cabin tops have a foam core, so soft spots around fittings are worth tapping out before buying.

What this means for the cover

As the TWM 289 TE and TWM 2810 TE by True World Marine series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the TWM 34 FT and TWM 288 TE by True World Marine series the market value and the replacement

cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the TWM 289 TE, TWM 2810 TE, TWM 34 FT by True World Marine and further series:

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.

Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
