Tung Hwa is a yard in Kaohsiung in the south of Taiwan. The family business was founded in 1961 to repair ships and later turned to pleasure craft, built in hand laid glassfibre. Its name became known through a partnership: Tony Fleming, an aeronautical engineer by training, and Anton Emmerton came to Taiwan in 1985 looking for a yard to build the motor yacht they had in mind, and they chose Tung Hwa. The first Fleming 55 hull left the slipway in 1986. The yachts are recognisable by their pilothouse with a sheltered inside helm, upright windows, side decks all the way round and a hull drawn for long passages at moderate speed.
Our model records list four designs from Kaohsiung: three motor yachts and one sailing yacht. The oldest is the Chebec at 14.7 metres, listed from 1977 to 1984. The motor yachts all carry the Fleming name: the Fleming 53 at 17.9 metres from 1987, the Fleming 55 at 18.5 metres from 1992 and the Fleming 50 at 16.99 metres from 1993. A 50 next to a 55 makes sense once you know the mould: the first eight hulls from the 55 tooling were finished as 50 footers with a shorter cockpit. The 50 and 53 end in 2003, while the 55 runs to 2015. No line reaches the most recent build years.
A Fleming is built for long distances, and a used one should be read through its logbook. Engine hours, the condition of the stabilisers and the state of the generator say more about the boat than its age. Teak decks on older hulls may need recaulking or replacing, and the window frames of the pilothouse are worth checking for leaks. Many of these yachts have crossed oceans or moved between continents, so a full survey with the boat out of the water pays off. The Chebec is a different case: as a sailing yacht from the late seventies, her rig, chainplates and deck hardware come first.
