The Neptim boats come from Tvedestrand, a small harbour town on the south coast of Norway. They were built by Tvedestrand Plastindustri, a glassfibre yard that according to Norwegian sales listings went bankrupt in 1983. The most familiar model is the Neptim 8000, a 26 foot cabin boat with an inboard engine that listings still describe as unusually roomy for its length. It is easy to recognise by its high topsides, which make it a family boat that is hard to fall out of. Engines found in these boats include diesels from Volvo Penta and Yanmar. The boats still change hands regularly in Norway and Denmark.
Our model records list two designs, both classed as motor yachts and both 7.9 metres long. The Neptim 8000 is shown for build years 1975 to 1985, the Neptim 800 for 1977 to 1984. Neither line reaches the recent build years, so even the youngest boat is more than forty years old. With the same length and almost the same name, the two are easy to confuse, so the exact designation in the papers is worth checking before purchase.
A Norwegian cabin boat of this age has usually seen many winters ashore and many summers in cold water. The glassfibre hull itself tends to last, but check the transom and the engine beds for moisture, as well as the deck around the windows and hatches. Many boats have been re-engined over the years; a newer diesel with known hours is a real plus, while an original engine needs a careful look at cooling, exhaust and shaft seal. Wooden interiors suffer from damp, so good ventilation matters. Original windows and their rubber seals are often due for renewal.
