Ulyz; cover, cost and conditions

Ulyz is a Belgian brand of inflatable boats and RIBs, founded in Brussels by Alexander Mandl and named after Ulysses. It started with a single inflatable offered in several sizes, then added the Starter, Freedom and Expert lines, followed later by the Freedom 300+ and the Pro-Fish for anglers. These are tenders and small leisure boats: tubes, a transom for an outboard, and a bag that fits in a car boot.

Our model records hold 14 Ulyz designs, every one an inflatable. Six belong to the Freedom line (360, 375, 450, 625, 750, 850), six to the Starter line (250, 350, 500, 650, 850 and Starter S 400) and two to Pro-Fish (400 and 450). The Freedom 360 and Starter S 400 appear first in 2007, the rest from 2008 or 2009, and twelve lines are recorded until 2016. Lengths run from the 1.8 metre Starter 250 to 4.3 metres for the Freedom 850 and Starter 850. The number in the name is not a length: the Freedom 375 is listed at 2.48 metres.

An inflatable lives a varied life. It rides on the foredeck of a yacht, sits deflated in a garage over winter, or gets pumped up on a beach for a morning of fishing. Rinse salt and sand off the tubes, keep them out of strong sun when not in use, and store the boat dry and loosely folded. A small outboard is easy to lift off, so lock it to the transom or take it home after each trip.
