Uniflite; cover, cost and conditions

Uniflite was an American yard from Bellingham, Washington, founded by Art Nordtvedt and based in a former plywood plant in Fairhaven. It began with small fibreglass runabouts and moved on to cruisers, sedans and sport fishers, and it also built river patrol boats for the US Navy. The company used only fire-retardant resins in its leisure boats. Chris-Craft took it over in 1984 and kept the boats going for a few more years under its own name.

Our model records list 14 Uniflite designs, one motorboat and 13 motor yachts, built between 1966 and 1980. Nine belong to the early generation of 1966 to 1973: the 23, 27, 31 Cruiser, 31 Sedan, 36 Cruiser, 36 Sport-Fisher, 36 Sport Sedan, 36 Yacht Home and 48. Five start in 1971: the 28, 31, 34, 36 and 42, with the 28 running to 1980. The number 36 alone stands for five variants. Sizes run from the 7.06 metre Uniflite 23 to the 14.62 metre Uniflite 48, and the number roughly gives the length in feet.

Every Uniflite is now a classic, and condition varies with the owner. Original fibreglass hulls are tough, but deck fittings, fuel tanks and wiring deserve a careful look after so many seasons. Most are marina boats, used for family weekends and coastal cruising. A dry winter ashore and a regular check of the engines keep them running.
