Unique; cover, cost and conditions
Unique is a Norwegian brand from Sarpsborg in Østfold, close to the Swedish border and the Oslofjord. The boats were built there until 2002, after which production passed to Nordic Oceancraft. The most familiar designs are the Unique 833 and the Unique 9000, and the 833 was tested in its day by the Norwegian magazine Sjøsport. The yard built cabin motor cruisers for fjord and coastal use, the everyday boat on Norway's south east coast. The model names give away the length, so 833 means 8.33 metres, while the letters ac, c and S mark different deck layouts.
Our model records list four Unique designs, all classed as motor yachts. The oldest is the Unique 833 ac at 8.33 metres, listed from 1983 to 1991. In 1985 two versions of the Unique 900 followed, the 900 c+ac and the 900 S, both 9.55 metres long and built until 1993. The Unique 1000 at ten metres appears from 1986 and also ends in 1993. No line reaches the most recent build years, and the Unique 9000 is not part of our records. The range is compact, between 8.3 and ten metres, and was created within little more than a decade.
A Unique on the market today is a boat from the eighties, and its history matters more than its brochure. Ask whether the engine is original or has been replaced, and look at the engine beds and the fuel tank, which are hard to reach on a cruiser of this size. Windows and hatches on boats of this age often need new seals. Norwegian boats are usually laid up ashore for the winter, so the cradle and the condition of the hull bottom tell a lot about how carefully a boat has been kept. Used Unique boats seldom come up for sale, so patience pays off.
