Van Der Poel Watersport is the name behind a yard in Hazerswoude, in the Dutch province of South Holland, whose boats are known as Stella Maris. It built steel motor yachts for inland waters, chiefly kotters and vlets, two classic Dutch types of displacement cruiser. A broker's listing for a 1978 Stella Maris Kotter describes a dark blue, round-bilged steel hull carrying a wooden superstructure and a teak deck. That combination is what makes the boats easy to pick out along a canal: a solid hull sitting low in the water, a warm timber deckhouse and lines that owe more to working craft than to production cruisers. Anyone looking for one will find them listed as Kotter, Vlet or Trawler.
