VDL Shipyards B.V. is a Dutch motor yacht yard from Waalwijk in North Brabant. From the mid 1990s it worked with the design office Vripack, building steel motor yachts in several lines: the Pilot models, the Royal series, whose best known boat is the 1600 Royal, and the Vitesse models. The Pilot 50, for example, has a steel hull, a draught of 1.5 metres and two guest cabins. The names follow two systems: on the Royal and Vitesse the four digit number is roughly the length in centimetres, on the Pilot the two digit number is close to the length in feet.

Our records list 11 models, all motor yachts. The Pilot line has three, the 11.78 metre Pilot 38, the 13.28 metre Pilot 44 and the 14.99 metre Pilot 50. The Royal line has four: the 9.6 metre Royal Craft, built from 1991 to 1997, and the Royal 1400, 1500 and 1600 from 13.5 to 15.2 metres. The Vitesse line also has four, the 1400, 1600, 1800 and 2000, from 13.5 to 19.45 metres. Build years run from 1991 to 2003, and no model is recorded beyond 2003.

Every VDL yacht is now more than twenty years old, and steel hulls want regular checks of coating and anodes. Most of these boats cruise rivers, canals and coastal waters, where locks and tight harbours test the fenders. A heated shed for the winter keeps condensation away from the steel and the interior joinery.
