Vicem builds motor yachts in Turkey. The house goes back to Sebahattin Hafizoglu and delivered its first yacht in 1991; alongside the base in Istanbul a yard site with direct water access was later built near Antalya. The model was the gulet, the timber two masted vessel of the Turkish coast. Construction is cold moulded: thin layers of mahogany are laid over a mould and bonded with epoxy, producing a hull that is light, strong and unusually quiet under way. You recognise the yachts by the unbroken timber tone of the topsides, the softly curved sheer and the low, long superstructure.

Our model records list 50 Vicem models, all of them motor yachts. Build years start in 2004 and run into current production. Fifty series are recorded: the Classic in 50, 52, 55, 58, 62, 65 and 71, some as flybridge and as IPS; the Sportfish in 54, 57 and 63; the Bahama Bay in 54, 56 and 61; plus the 46 IPS and the 67 Cruiser. Lengths run from 9.8 to 46.1 metres, half the models between 16.9 and 24.5 metres. The number gives the approximate length in feet.

Cold moulding is the thing to understand about these yachts. A hull of laminated mahogany bonded in epoxy is not a fibreglass hull and is not judged or repaired like one: it takes an impact differently, depends on an unbroken epoxy skin and belongs in the hands of a yard that has worked the method. How the hull is built therefore says more about the boat than its length does.
