Vincenzo Catarsi s.r.l.; cover, cost and conditions
Vincenzo Catarsi was a Tuscan boatbuilder, born in 1932, who died in 2018. His name became known through the Calafuria, which reached the market in the mid-1970s. The idea behind it joined the lines of the Italian gozzo, the traditional fishing boat, with those of a pilot boat. Alongside the pleasure boats, Catarsi also built working and fishing craft. In 2006 a reworked Calafuria was shown at the Genoa boat show. What makes a Calafuria recognisable is exactly this blend of fishing boat and pilot launch.
Our model records list twelve Calafuria designs: six motor yachts, five motorboats and one power catamaran. The oldest is the Calafuria 6, a 6.5-metre catamaran listed from 1976 to 1982. The Calafuria 25 Big Cruiser followed in 1984, and most other designs appear from 1990, from the Calafuria 19 and the three versions of the Calafuria 20, Cabin, Fisherman and Open, up to the Calafuria 41. The 41 is the largest at 13.15 metres, the 20 Open the smallest at 6.2 metres. Most lines end in 2012, the Big Cruiser, Big Game and 41 as early as 1997, the Calafuria 19 not until 2014.
Every Calafuria on the market today is a used boat, many with decades of Mediterranean summers behind them. Boats of this age reward a careful look at the transom, the engine beds and the joint between hull and deck. Teak decks on older boats may need recaulking or replacing. Diesel engines from the nineties often still run well if they have been serviced regularly, and their records are worth asking for. The smaller models up to about seven metres can be trailed, which widens the choice of cruising grounds.
