Visionboats is the work of Jan Andersen, a Danish boatbuilder who runs a one-man shop on the island of Funen. He trained on wooden boats and moved to carbon with the Black Marlin. He began drawing the trimaran in 2012 and built the prototype over about eighteen months of full-time work in 2014 and 2015. The result is ten metres long and weighs 1,460 kilograms ready to sail, with a carbon and epoxy structure laid up by infusion. The floats fold in or come off for road transport and tight berths, and a rotating carbon mast and a self-tacking jib complete the picture. In the Silverrudder, the single-handed race around Funen, the Black Marlin took line honours in 2015 and again in 2021. The design is now built in small numbers as the Marlin 33 at the Elica yard in Silistra, on the Danube in Bulgaria.

The kevlar-reinforced bottom lets the boat be run up a beach, which is part of how many owners use it, and the shallow draft of 0.40 metres with the board up opens creeks and anchorages that deeper boats cannot reach. When buying, ask about the race history: a boat sailed hard in the Silverrudder may have new sails and fresh fittings, or simply many hard miles.
