Vripack is a Dutch naval architecture and design studio from Sneek in Friesland, a region with a long maritime tradition. Dick Boon founded it in 1961. The studio has drawn motor and sailing yachts, explorer yachts and commercial vessels, with the boats themselves built in cooperation with shipyards. In the early years the focus lay on safety, seaworthiness and comfort. A familiar name from the studio is the Doggersbank, a series of explorer yachts sought after for their seaworthiness and adaptable layouts. For a buyer this means that Vripack stands for the design, while the yard that actually built the boat is found in its papers.
Our model records list 13 designs, ten motor yachts and three sailing yachts. Nine carry the Doggersbank name: the sailing yacht Doggersbank from 1966, the Doggersbank 702 A from 1967, the 1190 MY, 1300 MY, 1400 MY, 1700 MY and 1750 MY motor yachts built between 1977 and 1990, the Doggersbank 1450 MS, and the Doggersbank 67, which from 2021 is the only design to reach the most recent build years and at 20.65 metres the largest. The oldest entries are the Aquanaut 860 from 1965, at 8.6 metres the smallest boat, and the Aquanaut 1250 from 1966. The Viking Bank 1100 sailing yacht and an 18 metre Displacement Motor Yacht from 1993 to 1999 complete the list.
Many of these boats are now forty or fifty years old, and an older Doggersbank is above all a question of how it has been kept. Since different yards built to the same lines, finish and detail vary from one hull to the next, so a full survey is the place to start. Look at the hull and deck for corrosion or moisture, depending on the build material, and check the engines, tanks, wiring and steering gear. Ask for the builder's name, the original drawings and any refit history. Displacement yachts of this kind are made for steady cruising at modest speed, and range and fuel capacity matter more than top speed when planning longer trips.
