Vroegh & Alblas Jachtbouw is a Dutch yard for steel motor yachts. It is best known for the Barkas, hand built together with Drinkwaard to a design by Huitema. The boats share a sturdy steel hull, a compact superstructure and a layout made for rivers, canals and lakes. The names combine line and size: the number after Barkas, Black Rose or Bilhammer gives roughly the length in centimetres, so the Barkas 900 is nine metres long.

Our model records list 14 Vroegh & Alblas designs, all motor yachts, in four lines: five Barkas (900, 1000, 1100, 1150, 1200), four Black Rose (850, 950, 1050, 1150), three Darttrawler (43, 43 C, PH) and two Bilhammer (1150, 1250). Build years start in 1989 with the Black Rose and two Darttrawlers; the Barkas follow from 1990. Twelve models end by 1999, and the two Bilhammer run from 2000 to 2006. Lengths range from the 8.5 metre Black Rose 850 to the 14.95 metre Darttrawler PH.

These are inland cruisers at heart: low enough for many bridges, solid enough for locks and the odd bump on a quay wall. Steel rewards attention, so check paint, anodes and the bilge before each season, and treat any rust spot early. Many owners lift the boat out for winter or keep it in a roofed shed, which helps both the hull and the engine.
