Worth knowing

West Bay SonShip Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

West Bay SonShip Yachts comes from Delta, British Columbia. Its founder, Bernardus Vermeulen, known as Ben, emigrated from the Netherlands to western Canada and first worked in steel, fabricating and erecting structural parts for the region's building trade. In 1967 he set up a small yard on the south bank of the Fraser River in Delta, West Bay Boat Builders. The first hulls were work boats, from fast police patrol craft to commercial fishing vessels. In 1985 the West Bay 4500 Pilothouse became the first model for private owners, followed by motor yachts of 65 and 72 feet. The enclosed pilothouse is the yard's signature. The business remains in the family, run by sons Wes and Bas Vermeulen and son-in-law Danny Kilberg.

Our model records list one design, the SonShip 75 Motoryacht, built from 1994 to 2001 and measuring 23.62 metres. That makes it larger than the 65 and 72 foot yachts with which the yard first moved into private boating. The entry does not reach into recent build years, and the youngest yachts of this line are now a quarter of a century old. Anyone looking for a SonShip 75 will find it only on the brokerage market, often with several previous owners, refits and equipment renewed over the years. With a yacht of this size it pays to collect every record of yard visits, engine overhauls and conversions before talking about value.

A yacht of this age and size lives or dies by its maintenance records. Ask for engine hours, service logs for generators and stabilisers, and the dates of the last bottom paint and survey. Teak decks, window seals in the pilothouse and the condition of tanks deserve a careful look. Refits are common, so check which systems were renewed and which are original. Yachts of this size are usually built for long range cruising, and a long cruising history is normal rather than a warning sign, as long as the paperwork shows steady care and regular haul-outs.
