Westwood Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Westwood Marine builds motor cruisers in glassfibre. The yard began in Doncaster in the north of England. In 2013 the brand's Irish dealer bought the business and moved the whole operation to a site at Enniskillen airport in Northern Ireland, close to Lough Erne. Many of the designs came from the naval architect Andrew Wolstenholme. The range has included the A-series cruisers such as the A31, A35 and A38 as well as smaller boats carrying the SR and ST labels. The larger models are easy to recognise by their flybridge with a fixed canopy and a second helm position, a layout that suits sheltered rivers and loughs.
Our model records hold three designs, two listed as motor yachts and one as a motorboat. The oldest entry is the Westwood 38 at 11.5 metres, recorded for build years 1978 to 1984, and it is also the largest boat of the brand in our list. The ISIS 920 measures 9.19 metres and runs from 2005 to 2011. The Westwood ST29, the motorboat, is the smallest at 8.84 metres and spans 2006 to 2012. None of the three lines reaches into the most recent build years. Between the oldest design and the two younger ones lies a gap of more than twenty years in which our records show no model from this yard.
These cruisers are made for slow days on inland water, and that shapes what wears. Fenders and rubbing strakes take a beating in locks, so look at the gelcoat along the topsides and at the corners of the transom. On a flybridge boat, check the canopy, the windscreen seals and the cables running to the upper helm, because water finds its way along them. Shaft drives, sterngear and engine mounts deserve a survey on any older example, and a Westwood 38 from the late seventies will have had several owners and possibly a refit. Ask for the service history and, on boats kept on rivers, for the last lift out.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Which is the largest Westwood design in the records?
For Westwood Marine: The Westwood 38 at 11.5 metres, built from 1978 to 1984.
It is also the oldest model of the brand in our model records,
so a pre-purchase survey is worth arranging.
How does the Westwood ST29 differ from the other two?
For Westwood Marine: It is the only one of the three listed as a motorboat rather than a motor
yacht, at 8.84 metres with build years from 2006 to 2012.
Our source does not explain what the letters ST stand for.

Series by Westwood Marine, build years and cover
Westwood ST29 is a motorboat from Westwood Marine, built from 2006 to 2012.
ISIS 920 is a motor yacht from Westwood Marine, built from 2005 to 2011.
Westwood 38 is a motor yacht from Westwood Marine, built from 1978 to 1984.
For the Westwood ST29 and ISIS 920 by Westwood Marine series the market value and the replacement
cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Westwood 38 by Westwood Marine series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Westwood ST29 by Westwood Marine series:
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the ISIS 920, Westwood 38 by Westwood Marine series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
