Weta Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Weta Marine is a New Zealand story. The Weta 4.4 took shape between 2001 and 2006 in the hands of Roger Kitchen and his son Chris, with the first drawings by Tim Clissold of TC Design. Roger had spent hundreds of hours teaching children to sail in boats that were slow, cramped and tricky, and he wanted something better: easy to store, quick to rig, stable and fun for a whole family. Father and son built the first prototype in 2003, and the first production boat was sold in New Zealand in October 2006. Building moved first to China and later to Indonesia. Three hulls give the boat away, a slim main hull flanked by two floats, along with a mainsail cut with a broad, almost square head.

Our model records list a single design, the Weta 4.4, a trimaran of 4.4 metres. It appears from build year 2008 and runs right into the most recent build years. The hull is made of glassfibre, carbon fibre and foam, and the rigged boat weighs about 120 kilograms. One to three people sail it, with a combined crew weight of up to 240 kilograms. The mast stands 6.6 metres tall, the mainsail measures 9.3 square metres, the jib 3.2 and the gennaker 8. Rigged, the boat is 3.5 metres wide; for the road the floats fold in to an overall width of 1.7 metres. Rigging takes around twenty minutes, and the sailing bodies of New Zealand, France and Britain recognise the class.

Looking after a Weta is mostly about the trailer and the floats. Folding arms, pins and the beams that carry the amas take the strain of every launch, so they deserve a regular look. Carbon parts and foam sandwich dislike point loads, which means a boat that has been dragged up stony beaches may show soft spots on the bottom. Sails, gennaker and the furling gear wear out long before the hull does. On a second-hand boat, check the hull for repairs, the rudder and centreboard for chips, and ask how it was stored over winter. Most owners sail from beaches and clubs, often racing on weekday evenings.

Series by Weta Marine, build years and cover

Weta 4.4

Weta 4.4 is a cabin trimaran from Weta Marine, built since 2008.

What this means for the cover

As the Weta 4.4 by Weta Marine series is still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Weta 4.4 by Weta Marine series:

On a trimaran the floats and their beams are the weak point,

on folding models the mechanism as well.
