Wim van der Valk Jachten B.V.; cover, cost and conditions

Wim van der Valk set up his yard in the late sixties; sources give 1967 or 1968. He started with cabin and aft-cabin cruisers of seven to ten metres. Today the yard in Waalwijk in the Netherlands builds motor yachts with steel or aluminium hulls, either semi-custom or fully custom. The Vitesse series of semi-displacement yachts in steel and aluminium arrived in the mid-eighties, and the aft-cabin Continental followed in the nineties, a name that still defines the range. A Continental is easy to recognise by the aft cabin over the stern.

Our model records list 23 designs, all entered as motor yachts. Twenty belong to the Continental range, where the figure in the name gives the length in metres: from the Continental 15.00 at 14.96 metres through the 17.00 and 20.00 up to the Continental 25.00 at 25 metres. Three aluminium versions appear from 2007, the 18.00 Alu IPS, the 20.00 Alu and the 25.00 Alu IPS, along with the Continental II-23 from 2009. Next to them stand the Valk Trawler 17.00 and 20.00, built from 2007 to 2010, and the oldest entry, the Van der Valk 1260 AK of 1983, which at 12.6 metres is also the smallest. The most recent build years in our records end in 2015. Ten designs measure 20 metres or more and 21 at least 15 metres.

Steel and aluminium hulls each have their own needs. On a steel Continental the surveyor will sound the plating where water collects, in the bilges, under the engines and behind the tanks. Aluminium hulls do not rust but react badly to stray current and to the wrong metal in the wrong place, so the anodes and the earthing of the shore power deserve close attention. IPS pod drives on the later models have their own service intervals and are worth checking against the records. A yacht of this kind can easily have spent seasons in the Mediterranean, far from Dutch yards, so ask where each job was done.
