Windrider is an American maker of small trimarans. The brand grew out of the kayak manufacturer Wilderness Systems in the mid-nineties, when its founders Andy Zimmerman and John Shepard joined forces with the multihull designer Jim Brown. The first trimaran left the plant in 1996, rotomoulded in plastic with wave-piercing hulls. The company changed hands several times after that; Dean Sanberg bought it in 2009 and in 2015 it merged with Nickels Boatworks. WindRider LLC stopped building boats in 2020. The boats are easy to recognise by their slim plastic hulls and the open seating position in the main hull, and on some models the helmsman steers with the feet.
Our model records hold three designs, all listed as sailing trimarans. The oldest is the plain Windrider at 4.9 metres, built from 1997 to 2005. The Windrider 10, the smallest at 3.2 metres, runs from 1999 to 2006. The Windrider 17 is the largest boat of the brand in our list at 5.3 metres and is recorded for 2003 to 2011; Jim Brown drew it, and it carries a rotating mast with a mainsail and a roller furling jib. None of the three lines reaches into the most recent build years, as production has ended. All three stay well under six metres and fit on a road trailer.
Rotomoulded polyethylene shrugs off knocks that would crack a glassfibre hull, but it does not like long hours of strong sun, so a boat kept under a tarpaulin will look and feel better. On a used Windrider, look at the joints where the floats meet the crossbeams, the rudder and its foot pedals, and the rotating mast step. Sails and furling gear wear out long before the hulls do. Owners tend to launch from beaches and ramps, so check the bottoms of all three hulls for deep scores. As the factory has stopped building boats, ask whether spare parts come with the boat.
