Windsor Craft Yacht Company; cover, cost and conditions

Windsor Craft is an American brand of motor yachts with wooden hulls. The first generation was conceived by Irwin Jacobs, chairman of the boat group Genmar, as an upmarket day cruiser and was built at two factories in Little Falls, Minnesota. High labour costs and a shortage of skilled woodworkers brought that production to an end. In 2007 Genmar revived the name after Jacobs came across a yard in Turkey that specialises in wooden-hulled yachts, and the boats have been built there by hand since. Hull, deck and interior are mahogany and teak, and that is the giveaway: varnished wood, classic lines and a fit-out that recalls American cabin cruisers of earlier decades.

Our model records hold three designs, all listed as motor yachts. The Windsor Craft 30 measures 9.75 metres and the Windsor Craft 36 11.58 metres, both recorded for 2005 to 2012. The Windsor Craft 40 is the largest at 12.8 metres and runs from 2005 to 2013. None of the three lines reaches into the most recent build years. The names follow the length in feet, so the range is simply stepped in three sizes. Reports on the relaunch also mention hard top versions of the 36 and the 40. The three yachts sit close together, with just over three metres between the smallest and the largest.

A varnished mahogany hull is a commitment. Brightwork needs fresh coats every season or two, and any crack in the finish lets water into the timber, so walk round a used Windsor Craft looking for grey patches, lifting varnish and soft spots near fittings. Inside, check the joinery around windows and hatches for stains. Teak decks wear thin with scrubbing, and the seams want attention. Mechanically these are conventional twin-engine inboard boats, so engine hours, servicing and the condition of shafts and sterngear matter as on any yacht of this size. A survey by someone who knows wooden boats is money well spent.
