XL Marine; cover, cost and conditions
XL Marine is a young yard in central Italy, based south of Rome. Alessandro Giambalvo, Salvatore Oliviero and the naval architect Antonio di Mennato founded it in January 2006, and all three had previously worked at Itama. The first 43 was launched in May 2006, the 51 followed in 2008 and the 45 in 2012. The boats take their cue from the traditional fast open cruiser: clean, uncluttered lines, a wrap-around windscreen and a deep V hull with 22 degrees of deadrise aft. Hulls are resin infused with vinylester, single skin in the bottom and foam cored in the sides and superstructure. New builds paused between 2015 and 2021 while the yard concentrated on maintenance and refits, and production started again in 2022.
Our model records list six designs, all of them motor yachts. The XL Marine 43 at 13.2 metres opens the range there, listed from build year 2003 and still running into the most recent years. The 51, at 15.54 metres, appears twice: once for 2005 to 2012 and once from 2012 onwards. The 58 measures 17.5 metres and is listed for 2005 to 2012, while the 60 runs to 18.1 metres from 2012. The largest is the XL Marine 65 at 20 metres, built from 2012 to 2021. Three of the six entries, the 43, the later 51 and the 60, reach the latest build years. None is shorter than 13 metres, and five exceed 15 metres.
Boats of this kind are made for fast passages along the coast and long days at anchor. An infused hull with foam cored topsides rewards a careful look at the gelcoat around deck fittings and through-hulls, because moisture can reach the core once a seal gives way. Engines, cooling systems and steering want regular servicing, and the service history tells a buyer a great deal. On a used XL Marine it pays to compare the engine hours with the build year, to check the windscreen frame for any movement and to ask whether the boat went through the refit work the yard carried out between 2015 and 2021. At this size a survey out of the water is well worth the effort.
