Zeelander Yachts builds its boats at Groot-Ammers in the Netherlands. Sietse Koopmans founded the company in 2002 and gave it several years of development work before anything was shown in public. The first model was the Z44, unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show, and the Z55 and Z72 followed. Today the range carries numbers instead of letters, from the Zeelander 5 up to the Zeelander 8. Koopmans wanted hulls with curved surfaces that look different whichever way the sun falls on them, and that is still the easiest way to recognise one: rounded forms throughout, with hardly a straight edge in sight.
Our model records currently hold one Zeelander, the Zeelander 5. It is entered as a motor yacht of 14.7 metres, starting with build year 2023 and running into the most recent build years, so every example is a young boat from current production. The earlier Z44, at roughly 13.5 metres, and the larger Z55 and Z72 are not yet in our records. Within today's range the Zeelander 5 is the smallest model. Trade press reports describe three Volvo Penta IPS drives and a top speed of about 40 knots.
A fast boat on pod drives asks for regular attention below the waterline. The IPS units have their own service intervals, the anodes on the pods need checking, and the underwater gear should be inspected whenever the boat is lifted. Curved composite surfaces show every scuff, so good fenders and a calm approach to the berth pay off. A boat like this is made for longer coastal passages and quick crossings rather than an afternoon in the harbour. When a Zeelander 5 comes up second hand, the engine hours, the service history of the drives and the state of the electronics tell more than the shine of the hull.
