Worth knowing
Zwaluw; cover, cost and conditions
The Zwaluw name belongs to the Jachtwerf Zwaluw in Lage Zwaluwe, a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant on the Hollands Diep. The yard took its name from the village. It built motor cruisers with hard chine hulls, meaning a clear edge between bottom and topsides instead of a rounded turn of the bilge. Cruisers of this kind are at home on Dutch rivers, canals and lakes, and that is what they are made for: easy running, living aboard and a good view from the helm. Besides the designs in our records, a larger Zwaluwkruiser 1050 built in 1974 is on record. The boats are recognised by their angular hull and the typical superstructure of Dutch motor cruisers of the period.
Our model records list three designs, all of them motor yachts. The Zwaluw 800 measures 8.4 metres and runs from 1971 to 1982, the longest of the three. The Zwaluw 900 comes to 9.4 metres and is listed from 1971 to 1980, the Zwaluw 960 at 9.6 metres from 1975 to 1981. The number in each name sits close to the length in centimetres, with the 800 and 900 measuring a little more. None of the lines reaches the most recent build years, so the recorded boats are now between forty and fifty odd years old. Together they span 8.4 to 9.6 metres.
A Dutch cruiser of the seventies is bought on its condition, not its name. Find out what the hull is made of and have it surveyed: on a steel boat, ultrasonic thickness readings along the waterline and under the engine tell most of the story, while a glassfibre hull needs a check for osmosis. Look at the engine, which on many of these boats has been replaced at least once, and ask for the paperwork. Windows, wiring and fuel tanks age slowly but surely. On canals and in locks, fenders and rubbing strakes take the knocks, so their condition says a lot about how the boat has been handled.
