Summer belongs to the mistral from the north west: quiet mornings, then a breeze that builds within hours, accelerating again off Capo Carbonara, Spartivento and Teulada. When the wind backs into the sirocco, the Gulf of Cagliari is wide open to the south east and a calm bay turns into a lee shore. To the east lies the Capo Carbonara marine reserve, where anchoring is allowed on sand only, clear of the seagrass in which an anchor holds poorly anyway.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from May to September, with July and August the busiest and dearest weeks. Berths sit in the upper price band, yet well below the Costa Smeralda in the north east. Storage ashore is available locally, and the yards at Villasimius and around Cagliari lift all year. If you lie at anchor overnight, pick your patch of sand before the midday breeze and allow a generous swinging circle.
What this means for your policy
Southern Sardinia falls under the cruising range for Italy, Sardinia and Sicily; a policy written for the Adriatic alone will not carry you across. Two questions for your own contract: does it still apply while the boat winters ashore in a yard you do not own, and what does it ask of you when anchoring overnight with nobody aboard? Keep the ICC that RYA members carry abroad, and the registration papers, on board.
