Boat insurance for Sicily
Sicily sits between two seas, and the Strait of Messina is where you feel it. The Tyrrhenian and the Ionian differ in density, so a stream runs through the strait that turns roughly every six hours and reaches four to five knots at springs, with eddies at the narrows and ferries crossing in quick succession. In summer the mistral from the north west builds through the afternoon, the sirocco pushes swell onto the south coast, and winter brings the gregale.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October, with May, June and September the pleasantest weeks; July and August are crowded and dearest. Berths sit in the middle price band. Marinas on the south coast stay open through the winter, Ragusa and Licata are established winter bases, and the yards there lift all year. If you anchor, look for sand: holding in seagrass is poor, and damaging posidonia is fined in Italy.
What this means for your policy
Sicily falls under the cruising range for Italy, Sardinia and Sicily; a policy written for Greece or the Balearics alone will not carry you here. Two questions for your own contract: does it still apply while the boat winters ashore in a yard you do not own, and what does it ask of crew and equipment once night passages are part of the plan? Keep the ICC that RYA members carry abroad on board.
