Worth knowing
Aerofleet; cover, cost and conditions
Aerofleet is based in Givet in the French Ardennes, right on the Belgian border, and builds catamarans. The yard describes itself as a specialist that brings space and aviation technology into yacht building. For the Aero 50 it names a vacuum-bagged epoxy sandwich with carbon and Kevlar, materials more familiar from aircraft than from boats. The range includes sailing and power catamarans: the Aero 45 in an open version and with a fixed roof, the Aero 48 E, the Aero 50 also as a powercat, and the Aero 58, driven by solar energy. Belgian media have reported on an electric solar catamaran from the yard. The boats stand out for their light composite build and the idea of combining sail, motor and solar power.
Our model records hold two entries, both for the Aero 45: one as a sailing catamaran, one as a power catamaran. Both measure 14 metres and are entered for build years 2020 to 2024. Neither reaches the most recent build years. The larger designs, the Aero 48, 50 and 58, are not in our records. That says a lot about the size of the series: Aerofleet builds few boats, and an Aero 45 on the used market is the exception rather than the rule.
A composite catamaran of this kind needs a surveyor who understands carbon and Kevlar laminates. Check the bridgedeck, the hull to deck joints and the areas around the engine mounts for cracks or delamination. Solar panels, batteries and charge controllers age faster than the hull, so ask for their history and capacity. With two hulls, both rudders, saildrives or shafts and both bilges need a look. A well kept Aero 45 is a quiet, efficient boat for long passages and calm anchorages.
