AHPC; cover, cost and conditions

AHPC stands for Australian High Performance Catamarans. Greg Goodall runs the company as managing director and also designs its boats, and over the years the business has grown from a small custom builder into a series producer of racing catamarans. The longest-running name is the Taipan, drawn by Goodall and Jim Boyer in the early 1980s as a development of the Mosquito; it was built either by amateurs or by AHPC, and its light hulls are closer in shape to the A Class. The Viper followed in 2007, a five metre cat in glass and epoxy foam sandwich, recognised by the international sailing federation as a one-design within Formula 16.

Our model records hold seven designs between 4.3 and 5.5 metres. Two appear as sailing catamarans, the Viper at 5 metres and the Taipan 4.9 at 4.95 metres. Four more carry the code SPCAT: the 430, the C2 Formula 18, the Taipan at 4.88 metres and the Viper Strike. The G14, a 4.3 metre sailing boat, completes the list. The Taipan 4.9 has the longest run, from 1985 to 2018, while the other designs start between 2007 and 2013. The Viper continues until 2020, the latest end date in the list. At 5.5 metres the C2 Formula 18 is the largest boat, and no design reaches the most recent build years.

Beach cats live hard lives. They are dragged up sand, launched through surf and capsized on purpose in training, so a used one needs a careful look at the hull bottoms, the beam sockets and the trampoline lacing. Foam sandwich hulls can hide delamination, which a light tap with a coin often reveals as a dull sound. Check the mast base, the shrouds and the trapeze wires for wear, and look at the road trailer and the launching trolley too. A boat that has been raced in a club fleet often comes with a record of class measurements, which helps when judging its condition.
