Aksano Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions
Aksano Catamarans comes from Monroe in Washington State. Oz Aksan and Shaun Magruder founded the company in 2003 to build smaller and more affordable power catamarans, and regular production started in 2004. The boats are made of fibreglass and foam, with highly loaded parts in a blend of fibre and polyurethane and no wood anywhere. The maker describes the twin hulls as unsinkable. Speaking to a local newspaper, Magruder stressed stability above all: you can stand on one side and lean out without the boat tipping over. The Aksanos were meant both as yacht tenders and as quick sport boats, and they are easy to spot by their slim lines and two narrow hulls.
Our model records list three designs, all power catamarans: the F3, F16 and F18. For the F16 and F18 the number gives the length in feet, while the F3, at 3.96 metres, is a thirteen footer and the smallest of the range. The F3 is listed from 2003 to 2012, the F18 at 5.49 metres from 2004 to 2015 and the F16 at 4.88 metres from 2007 to 2015. The F16 was explicitly slotted in between the F3 and the F18. None of the designs reaches into recent build years; the last entries end in 2015. According to the newspaper report, the F3 seated four and ran on a 50 horsepower outboard.
A small catamaran carries its weight on two narrow hulls, so both deserve equal attention. Check the bows and keels for scrapes from beaching, and look at the bridging deck for stress cracks where the hulls meet. Foam cored fibreglass should be sounded for soft spots or delamination, especially around the transom where the outboard bracket transmits load. Because the boats were sold as tenders, many have lived on davits or the deck of a larger yacht, so lifting points and chafe marks are worth a look. On any used boat, ask for the outboard's service history and check steering cables and fuel lines. With production ended in 2015, spare parts may need patience.
