Antares Yachts (Canada); cover, cost and conditions

Antares started life at PDQ in Ontario, where the first hull of this catamaran was laid up in 2001 to drawings by Ted Clements. When PDQ chose to concentrate on powerboats, Rob Poirier and Clements bought the moulds in January 2008 and set up Antares Yachts. Since then the boats have been built in San Fernando on the Río de la Plata, just outside Buenos Aires, by hand and only a few hulls a year. They are meant for couples who want to cruise for a long time. An Antares 44 is easy to recognise by its sheltered helm with hard bimini and a glass windscreen with wipers, its self-tacking jib and twin diesels on shaft drives rather than saildrives.

Our model records list one design from the brand: the Antares 44 sailing catamaran at 13.4 metres, recorded for the build years 2000 to 2012. The entry does not reach into the most recent build years. The 44i, 44 GS and 44 GT versions that the sailing press describes are not listed as separate models. Because the yard turns out only a handful of boats each year, the used market is small, and many hulls have logged long passages before they change hands.

A bluewater catamaran wants care where the miles show. On a used Antares 44 it pays to look at the shaft seals and cutless bearings, since twin shaft drives mean two of everything below the waterline. The bridgedeck, the beam attachments and the chainplates take the loads of offshore sailing and deserve a careful survey. Long passages wear the self-tacking jib track, the furler and the running rigging. Tankage, watermaker, solar and battery banks are often upgraded by previous owners, so service records tell much of the story. A boat that has crossed oceans is no worse for it if the paperwork is complete.
