Boulogne Conception Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Boulogne Conception Marine, or BCM, builds the Cirrus catamarans. The story starts in 1996 with racing performance in mind from day one. Behind BCM is Manu Boulogne, who won the Formula 18 world title in 2003 sailing with his brother on their own design, the BCM Cirrus F18. That boat was an early take on fuller hull volume, an idea other builders followed later. The Cirrus name and the racing pedigree give these boats away: light platform, tall rig, little weight spent on comfort.

Five Cirrus models appear in our records. Two are filed as sport catamarans (Cirrus Formula 18 and Cirrus Q) and three as sailing catamarans (Cirrus B1, Cirrus Evo 17 and Cirrus R). The data begin in 2014 with the Formula 18, followed by the Cirrus Q from 2015, the Evo 17 from 2016 and the B1 and R from 2018, all running into the latest build years. Lengths range from 5 metres for the Cirrus Q to 8.81 metres for the Cirrus R, with the Evo 17 at 5.09, the Formula 18 at 5.52 and the B1 at 8.21 metres.

Beach cats live on a trolley or trailer and get rigged on the sand, so check shrouds, trampoline lacing and rudder fittings before every launch. Rinse everything with fresh water after a salty session and roll the sails rather than folding them. For regattas, a good road trailer and a tidy box of spares matter as much as boat speed.

As the Cirrus B1, Cirrus Evo 17 and Cirrus R by Boulogne Conception Marine series are still in

production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

As the Cirrus Formula 18 and Cirrus Q by Boulogne Conception Marine series are still in

production, parts are available and repairs are predictable.

Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.

For the Cirrus B1, Cirrus Evo 17, Cirrus R by Boulogne Conception Marine series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.

For the Cirrus Formula 18, Cirrus Q by Boulogne Conception Marine series:

Open catamarans are beached and trailed, so most damage happens ashore and in transit,

not on the water.
