Broadblue is a British name for cruising sailing catamarans. The Rapier line is the sportier side: the Rapier 550 was designed by Darren Newton and Nick Bailey and built at Multimarine in Cornwall as a fast cruising cat that can be sailed single-handed from inside. The other Broadblue models are classic cruising cats with living space in the bridgedeck between the hulls. You know them by their slim hulls and their names: the three digit number roughly gives the length in feet times ten, so 385 means about 38.5 feet, and suffixes such as S2 or S3 mark later series.

Our model records list nine designs, all sailing catamarans. The Broadblue 385 comes first in 2002, then the 435 in 2003, the 415 and 500 in 2004, the 345 S2 in 2007, the 385 S3 and Rapier 400 in 2009, the Rapier 550 in 2010 and the 346 in 2015. Four lines reach the latest build years: the 346, 385 S3, Rapier 400 and Rapier 550. Lengths run from 10.2 metres for the 345 S2 and 346 to 16.76 metres for the Rapier 550, with four models between 11.7 and 12.7 metres, the 435 at 13.25 and the 500 at 15.25 metres.

A catamaran is wide, so a double berth or a mooring is often the practical choice, and lifting needs a proper sling setup. Many Broadblue owners use their boats for long passages and Atlantic crossings, where twin engines, watermakers and solar panels earn their keep. Check rudder bearings, beam fittings and the bridgedeck underside after rough passages.
