Calabria Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Calabria Boats was founded in 1987 in Merced, California, and builds fibreglass ski and wakeboard boats. The range consists of four lines: Team V, Pro V, Pro V II and Cal Air. The Pro V is a dedicated wakeboard boat with ballast tanks built into the liner that use gravity to fill remarkably fast. The Pro V II followed in 2006. The Team V is a special edition of the Pro V with generous seating, plenty of storage and a ballast system that takes up to 1,000 pounds of water, 300 more than the standard boat. Water in the tanks pushes the stern down and shapes the wake that riders jump from.

Our model records list five motorboats between 6 and 7.19 metres. Four of them, the Calabria Cal Air, Calabria Pro V, Calabria Pro V II and Calabria Team V, start in 2007 and reach the most recent build years. The Pro V and Team V measure 7.19 metres and are the largest, while the Cal Air and Pro V II come in at 6.58 metres. The oldest entry is the Ski Brendella at 6 metres, built from 1986 to 1992, which is also the shortest boat. Our records show no entries between 1992 and 2007, so the current lines make up most of the picture.

A tow boat works hard, so engine hours tell you more than the build year. Ask for the service history, check the gearbox oil and look for water in the bilge around the shaft seal. Ballast pumps, bags and tanks should be tested by filling and emptying them fully; a slow pump or a damp liner points to work ahead. A wakeboard tower takes heavy loads at its mounting points, so inspect the deck around the bolts for cracks. Upholstery and audio systems suffer in the sun, and the trailer with its brakes, bearings and lights deserves its own close look.
