CAT-STADL; cover, cost and conditions
CAT-STADL is based in Muhr am See in Franconia, southern Germany, and builds racing sport catamarans under the Eagle name. Hulls, beams, mast and boom are carbon, and on the foiling version so are the foils, which keeps the boats very light: the Eagle 18 HT weighs 125 kilograms ready to sail. It is a two-handed racing cat with double trapeze and an asymmetric spinnaker. The Eagle 20 HF is a foiling two-hander of 6.20 metres and 155 kilograms that lifts onto its foils from around seven knots of wind and can be sailed on conventional daggerboards in light air. The sailor Beto Pandiani has used the yard's boats for ocean crossings.
Our model records hold five Eagle sport catamarans, filed under the code SPCAT, and all five reach the most recent build years. The Eagle 18 and Eagle 18 HT have been in the range longest, both from 2001 and both 5.5 metres long. The Eagle 15 Beach joined in 2007 and is the smallest at 4.48 metres, followed by the Eagle 16 Sport from 2009 at 5 metres. The Eagle 20 HF is listed from 2011 and, at 6.1 metres, is the largest design. None of the five is longer than just over six metres, so the range runs from a beach cat to a foiler.
Carbon is stiff and light but does not forgive hard knocks, so check the hulls for impact damage around the bows and where the boat sits on the trolley or trailer. Look closely at the beam to hull connections, the mast foot and the dolphin striker, which carry the rig loads. On the 20 HF, inspect the foils and their cases for chips and delamination, since a small nick changes how the boat flies. Trampolines and trapeze wires age in the sun and are cheap to renew compared with what they protect. A UV tarpaulin and a well padded trailer keep a carbon cat in shape between regattas.
