Catalac Catamarans Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Catalac is a family of cruising catamarans from Britain. The name joins Cata and Lac, after Tom Lack, whose company was based in Christchurch, Dorset. Working with designer John Winterbotham, he produced the first Catalac 9M, the core model of the brand. Every other type is derived from it, and the 8M even uses the same hulls. Lack made a point of the design's stability. When his company stopped building, other yards took over the moulds and carried on in smaller numbers, which is why all Catalacs share one basic concept and differ mainly in length.
Our records hold ten Catalac entries, all sailing catamarans. Two naming systems run side by side: metres (8, 8 m, 9, 9 m and 12) and feet (27, 30, 34 and 41), plus one entry simply called Catalac. Sorted by length they form four groups: three around 8 metres (the 8 m at 8.05 and the 8 and 27 at 8.3), four around 9 metres (the 9 and 30 at 8.89, the 9 m and the plain Catalac at 9), the 34 at 10.3 metres and the 12 and 41 at 12.5 metres. Build years run from 1968 for the Catalac 9 m to 1998 for the Catalac 8.
A Catalac is now an older boat, so the bridgedeck, the hull joints and the rudders deserve a careful look. Its beam asks for a wide berth or a mooring buoy, and not every crane can lift it. In return it sits upright, dries out on a tidal beach and gives a family plenty of room for weeks along the coast.
